Sage

Characteristics and Preferences of the Sage

Practices for you

  • Reading sacred texts and other thematic books
  • Journaling your thoughts and ideas for greater understanding
  • Writing out meaningful and thoughtful prayers
  • a service that moves predictably and logically, perhaps with a written liturgy
  • the service flows smoothly, has been well-rehearsed
  • prayers, sermons, and other media are presented orderly and not "off the cuff"

Some challenges you may face

  • Becoming dry and aloof
  • Losing touch with real-life feelings and emotions
  • Valuing the feelings of others as valid information

The way you best receive information when learning in other areas of life is similar to how you receive spiritual information as well. As the Sage, you want to know how things are ordered, how things came to be, and how things can best be maintained in an orderly fashion moving forward. You value tradition. To stretch yourself, try to read and engage with materials from sources and contexts that are unfamiliar. You may want to learn more about a religious tradition you are unfamiliar with, or about the spiritual context of an ethnic group different than your own. To ground yourself, lean into mystical practices of simply being in the moment. Think of the scripture, "Be still and know that I am God." Psalm 46:10

Some Questions to Ponder For Continued Spiritual Growth

    • How much do you blame yourself for past mistakes, and are you holding onto grudges toward others?
    • How honest are you with yourself? Do you honestly love and appreciate everything about who you are?
    • How well do you know your true inner self? How much time do you spend getting to know the person you really are?
    • Do you suffer from inner turmoil?
    • Do you lack inner peace and contentment?
    • How easily can you forgive others?
    • What's missing in your spiritual life?

The work of nurturing your spirit starts with your relationship with yourself. Whether your health and happiness are suffering, or you want to learn to prevent future problems, tending to and cultivating your spirit is a critical part of self-care and healthy habits. And taking care of your spirit requires new ways of thinking.
